To celebrate #OlympicPeace we’re sharing stories of how sport brings the world together. Today, a story about an athlete who wants to run
for his country. Not from it. Guor Mading Maker didn’t have a childhood. The civil war in Sudan snatched it away. Forced to flee his country, he sought refuge in the United States where his gym teacher encouraged him to take up running. He had only ever run for his life and didn’t know any other way. The memories that came rushing with every training session were painful, but Guor pushed on. At the Olympic Games London 2012, he was dubbed ‘the man without a country’ as he competed under the Olympic flag. A lot has changed since then. South Sudan is a country now recognised by the IOC.
