Japanese Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA) Astronaut Kimiya Yui and Russian Cosmonaut Mikhail Kornienko work together on the JAXA Protein Crystal Growth investigation. An association was found between two polymorphisms and spaceflight-induced ocular-visual changes. Statistical modeling showed that vitamin B-12 deficiency and genetics were significant predictors of many of the ophthalmic outcomes that were observed. Protein crystallization helps researchers study how proteins work, and to design new formulations that can improve patient health.
