A very famous French bike race rolled through the Swiss hometown of Eddie Bauer guide @CarolineWareGeorge today. In 89-degree heat, the best cyclists in the world charged 184 kilometers into the Alps, including brutal climbs over the 1,445-meter and 1,527-meter passes in the Valais region, while finishing on an average 8.4 percent grade over the last 10 kilometers and ending the brutal climb at the 1,960-meter Emosson dam near Finhaut. We explored this spectacular zone beneath Mt Blanc with Caroline and a crew of four guides last winter and gained a new appreciation for the culture, steepness and exposure in her beautiful, mountainous—and very Swiss—home turf perched just over the pass from Chamonix. Not a bad place for a mountain guide to live.
