From Ruddy Roye (@ruddyroye), photographing in Minneapolis, Minn.: Valerie Castile spent most of her time under the tent that housed the free cupcakes she was giving out to passerby. Today was Philando Castile's 33rd birthday. She paced the area, keeping herself busy by unboxing stacks of cupcakes for the patrons who had attended Rondo Days. "I am coping by the Grace of God and the spirit of my son. We have to make some changes, and I am working on that." She didn't say much. She found solace in playing with one of her niece.
The Phifer family from Minneapolis stopped by the tent to give their condolences and grab a cupcake. Valerie Castile did not say no to a hug or a quick word. She welcomed the Phifer family with a choice of plain or chocolate cupcakes.
"Seeing what can happen to Philando is an awakening for everyone. It is like the straw that broke the camel back. We have to come up with policies that will change the laws. There are just too many ways of bending the rules and it has to change. The hardest part for me was hearing the little daughter say, 'momma I am hear for you,' Kathy Phifer told me.
