Nicolaia Rips grew up in the Chelsea Hotel, where she spent many of her afternoons with the unruly oddballs on West 23rd Street. Now 17, Ms. Rips has written a memoir “Trying to Float: Coming of Age in the Chelsea Hotel," which is based on her childhood tales at the iconic hotel, which she kept in a diary. “I would come home and tell my parents all these fantastic tales,” said Ms. Rips. “Well, not fantastic.
