Notice anything unusual about #Bongo? That's right, he only has one tusk! We have three elephants in our care like this: Bongo, Makireti, and Sities. Sometimes tusks break off, fall out (as Bongo's did), or simply never grow.
While elephants can survive without a tusk, they're definitely better off with them. Many people ask if we can dye or remove tusks to deter poachers. These aren't viable options for several reasons: Tusks are essentially teeth; technically, they're elongated incisors. Elephants rely on them to forage for food, move objects, and fight during musth. Besides, a third of the tusk is actually inside the skull, so ruthless ivory poachers wouldn't be dissuaded by shortened or discolored tusks.
That being said, happy-go-lucky Bongo is certainly making the best of his one-tusk situation! He's one of the most cheerful elephants that we've ever had the pleasure of raising at the #DSWT. Learn more about him at: ►thedswt.org/bongo◄
