My heart is heavy for the police officers that were killed in the #Dallas shooting during what had been a peaceful protest. Make no mistake, we can mourn the loss of murdered police officers while still fighting for #BlackLivesMatter and for the necessary changes of the US criminal justice system that disproportionately kills and incarcerates people of color. I feel great sadness about #PhilandroCastile and #AltonSterling as well as the police officers that lost their lives last night. White folks, if you are upset by these events, please look for deeper ways of engagement than posting on social media. Google your local #BlackLivesMatter chapter to donate or show up at meetings and/or protests. Read books about our criminal justice system's institutionalized racism ("The New Jim Crow" is a great place to start) and get okay with being uncomfortable in order to change yourself and those around you. While we wait, black folks and other people of color are dying and communities are being destroyed. The time is now.
