Friend of Dazed @alex_t_w_ attended the #blacklivesmatter rally in #Oakland last night. Here, he describes what happened and shares his thoughts: . “There were a total range of moods in Oakland last night. 98% peaceful, somewhat sad and frustrated, but there were bursts of passion and anger during the speeches which took place in Frank Ogawa Plaza. More than anything there was a collective sense of urgency to be heard; change is needed and the OPD have a lot to answer for at the moment (there has been a recent spate of controversy involving multiple police chiefs quitting, sex scandal, racist and homophobic messaging between officers, corruption..) . When we left the police HQ and marched to the freeway the mood evolved: it became almost festive. Defiant and strong. Everyone sat down to show we were peaceful – hundreds chanted, clapped, there were drumming circles, dancing circles. The cars who were all held back were honking in time to the chants as an act of support. The chants were powerful: "no justice, no peace! No racist police!" "black lives matter!" They projected Alton and Philando's faces on to the side of a large white truck on the freeway. . So many communities came together to vocalise. There were banners in Spanish, groups of queer radicals, children, skaters. From the couple of people I spoke to, they all felt that police brutality and recklessness has reached breaking point. Police reform is needed. Police brutality is real, it's tearing up lives, and it's needless. A lot of people were proud that so many people had joined; there was celebration when we were on the freeway demanding to speak to Libby Schaaf (mayor of Oakland). People were saying that they felt this was only the beginning of their voices being heard this way, and that mass action like this is required to start that discourse, and to demand change.” ? @spiritmagik
