From the November 29, 1943 natural history feature — Busy Beavers: The industrious little animals are helping to save the U.S. soil. Pictured here, "A beaver swims through a Bear Mountain pond carrying stick between its big teeth. Beaver uses webbed hind feet for swimming. Wood is food and construction material. Beavers prefer to eat, in this order, bark of poplar, cottonwood, willow, birch. Sticks build dams and lodges. In winter wood is stored on pond bottom near lodge."
