I am a descendant of William Bradford, who landed on Plymouth Rock.
I am a descendant of Greenwood Le Fleur, chief of the Choctaw nation
I am a member of the Daughters of the American Revolution: a documented descendant of a soldier who fought in the Revolutionary war.
I am related to President Andrew Jackson who founded the Democratic Party and won the Battle of New Orleans, defeating the British army that had just taken out Napoleon.
And I am a descendent of Emily and Frank Rubic, immigrants from the Philippines.
In essence, I am the oppressed and the oppressor.
I am the captive and the captor.
I am he who first landed here and I am he upon whom they landed.
I am American.
This is #America.
As I stand here on this #4thofJuly, in full #appreciation of the country and circumstance into which I was born rather than earned or created with my own hands, I believe that what we are trying to birth is a better understanding and application of the word FREEDOM, the very thing this country stands for. So important is this task of birthing our new understanding of #FREEDOM that I’m willing to examine my own #beliefs around it.
