She was one of two children injured in what the U.S. said was an American gunship’s accidental bombing of a Doctors Without Borders hospital in #Kunduz in October 2015, wheeled into the emergency room after a 12-hour journey by helicopter and station wagon. Shrapnel had shredded one of Madina’s legs and shattered an arm.

She wouldn’t let anyone take off a splint to examine her wounds, but her Italian nurse, Giorgia Novello, managed to comfort her enough to go into surgery.
