Life in a Tibetan monastery: in a scene reminiscent of the middle ages, giant cauldrons are used to mix a batch of yak butter tea for a thousand monks waiting in the prayer hall at Derge monastery. Yak butter tea is a mix of yak butter, salt, and a thick tea broth made from boiling both leaves and stems. It is highly caloric, good for energy for long prayer sessions in the cold.
