Dr. Helene Gayle, whose work in public health has landed her on lists of the world’s most powerful women, prepares to walk down the aisle with her flower girls in tow. She was about to marry Dr. Stephen Keith on June 4 at Christ United Methodist Church in Washington, D.C. The couple had known each other for over 30 years before connecting romantically. They met very early in their careers in 1979 at the Student National Medical Association Conference in Los Angeles. Dr. Gayle was still in medical school at the University of Pennsylvania and Dr. Keith was a resident at UCLA. Through the years their friendship grew deeper as both doctors were passionate about HIV and AIDS, especially in communities of color.
