For Zoé Lawrence (@wheresfrankocean), photography began as a labor of love with her friends. “I started off by taking photos of my closest girlfriends,” the 21-year-old says. “Eventually I started using actual models, but I still go back to my girls. I really love the intimacy and trust I feel when I’m working with them.” To the Florida native, #GirlGaze is “about giving girl/ femme-identifying creatives a platform to share their work and vision. It's nice to see spaces like these pop up for us.” And it’s not just about the girls behind the camera for her, either. “I want girls to see my work and be able to picture themselves in my photos,” Zoé says. “I’m working on adding more diversity in my photos in order to help girls feel represented and see themselves more in the art world. My main goal is inclusiveness.” And she’s bringing that vision to a range of mediums. In addition to contributing to @RookieMag (thanks to founder Tavi Gevinson sliding into her DMs), Zoé is also studying TV production in college. “Eventually I want to direct my own films,” she says. But there’s one surprising thing you’ll probably never see Zoé feature. “I really dislike avocados. For some reason people find that really surprising?” she says. “But I never have to pay extra for guac so I don’t feel too bad about it!” ✨ Words by @hannamariehoward.
