On #WorldRefugeeDay, I find myself thinking about this sweet little girl Razelle, and her family. Two years ago I met them in Mafraq, Jordan. The word "mafraq" means "split" in Arabic. And there was such a sense of brokenness in the air as we met with families who had fled the war in Syria. People shattered by devastation, traumatized from seeing things that no human should ever be forced to witness. We listened to their stories. All we could offer was our willingness to hear them. To learn. There was such gratitude. The fact that someone was listening made these families feel better. • Thinking about that now breaks my heart. As I hear so many people say we should shutter our boarders; that we should disregard the storied American values etched onto the Statue of Liberty. My heart hurts. Because these people aren't statistics. They are families. Mothers and daughters who are hungry and afraid. Fathers who cannot sleep because their bodies are filled with adrenaline from the deep fear that people are coming to harm their families. These people could be me. Could be you. They are us. • On a day like today, please remember that. While I don't pretend to know what the answer is to the complex problem of how we help everyone, I do know that there is no "us" and "them." There is only a collective "we." And we owe it to humanity to remember that we are truly all one. We owe it to our fellow man to bear witness to their humanity. To see them. Acknowledge them. And to not shy away from the reality of suffering. Only then will we begin to change things...
