Today is #WorldRefugeeDay. Currently there are 65 million people displaced in the world, the most in recent history. Included in this number are mothers, fathers, grandparents and most disturbingly a heartbreakingly huge number of children. No country, regardless of the fear-mongering rhetoric of its politicians is exempt from its legal and moral obligations to offer assistance to and protect the rights of those displaced. Today is a day to commit to our courage, compassion and decency. Today is a day that we can rise in the face of fear, a day that we can beat back petty suspicion and the voices that would keep us small. Today we can commit to live up to the ideals set out before us by so many courageous and wise leaders. Join me, the tremendous advocates at Refugees International and so many other wonderful aid organizations and say clearly, defiantly, "I stand against bigotry and cruelty. I stand against the blind eye. I stand with determination. I stand with courage. I stand with hope. And I stand with refugees".
