For Father’s Day, TIME LightBox asked 14 photographers who’ve dedicated themselves to making extensive work about their families to reflect on their experiences with photographing their own dad. “This is my father,” says Mitch Epstein, a American photographer. “Bill Epstein was a furniture merchant and landlord in the small New England town of Holyoke, Massachusetts. Through my dad and Holyoke, I confronted the faltering American dream: enterprising individuals were losing out to a supersize-me ideal: bigger was better. Big malls, big box stores, big drinks.
