“As a queer black woman in the South, I know that discrimination goes beyond just the color of your skin. It exists here in Georgia, but it's all around us, really. I’ve always wanted to make a difference, to stand up for the causes I believe in. But I felt like it would always be me against the world. When I moved back to Atlanta after college, I discovered a community of other activists who believed in the same things I did. Not only did they make me feel like I was understood, they encouraged me to run for office. To represent what is lacking at the Capitol. And as a queer black woman in the South, at 24 years young, I won that seat in the House. Now, I get to stand up for my community — the same community who stood up for me.” — Park Cannon, Georgia House of Representatives
