He asked a #friend to testify after the war that “homosexuals are not cowards.” Arondeus was raised in #Amsterdam, but cut off ties with his family at age 17 after arguments about his homosexuality. He joined the Dutch resistance shortly after the Germans invaded the #Netherlands in 1940. In an effort to save Dutch Jews, Arondeus’s unit helped to provide them with falsified identity papers. In 1943, the group succeeded in bombing the Amsterdam Public Records Office. Thousands of records which might have helped the Nazi occupiers to invalidate forged documentation were destroyed. Five days later, Willem and his comrades were arrested. He was one of twelve who were executed in July 1943. Yad Vashem recognized Willem Arondeus as Righteous Among the Nations on June 19, 1986. Today the museum spoke about its outrage at the attack on the #Pulse Club in #Orlando, Florida, which specifically targeted the #LGBT community. The Museum expresses its condolences to the many families and friends who lost loved ones in this depraved act. We are reminded of the dangers of extremist ideologies. During the Nazi era, the German government dramatically intensified their persecution of homosexuals who were deemed unfit for the “Aryan community.” Some 50,000 were sent to prison and between 5,000 and 15,000 were incarcerated in concentration camps where many perished. #NeverAgain #Remember #USHMM #photooftheday #Pride2016
