?❤️?Not all bacteria are bad, and for some amphibian species, that could be especially good news. SCBI scientists are working on taking probiotics (or good bacteria) from amphibian species that survive the chytrid disease and transferring them to species that are most affected by chytrid. If the researchers can find the right cocktail of probiotics to provide protection, this could be the key to returning frogs to the wild and preventing epidemics of chytrid before they spread. Dr. Matt Becker, a postdoctoral researcher at SCBI, has so far tried a number of different probiotics on Panamanian golden frogs, without success. His ongoing studies will help identify why some individuals can survive the disease—and whether that has to do with probiotics, genetics or a combination of the two.
