(3/6) One feature of the Mirai that’s particularly entertaining for passengers is the ECO Score meter on the dashboard, which tracks the acceleration of the car and scores how well the driver brakes, cruises and maximizes fuel efficiency. The Mirai will score your overall drive as well as short segments of the ride. “You get a score between 0 and 100, and you want to be somewhere around 60 or 70,” Brian says. Vehicles use more energy when accelerating and braking sharply. Instead, maintaining a steady speed, minimizing braking and coasting to a stop are better practices for energy efficiency. When Rebecca and her friends are in the car, they get mad if Brian’s score drops below 50. “As we’re driving, they’re challenging me to get the best ECO Score possible,” he says, laughing. “Sometimes it’s dangerous because I have to stop where there’s a stoplight! They say, ‘Just go for your ECO Score.’ And I’m like, ‘It’s red. I can’t go.
