Dr. Cecily Koppuzha and Lionel Sotomayor incorporated the bride’s Indian heritage into their ceremony. She, her family and the groom’s mother decorated their arms and hands in traditional henna art.
The couple's first date at a skating rink on the M.I.T. campus in Cambridge had ended tragically with a trip to a Boston hospital when Mr. Sotomayor's right skate blade had accidentally run over Ms. Koppuzha's left hand. Although they had overcome their nightmare of a first date, they would soon face an even greater obstacle. During the first two and a half years of their relationship, the bride and groom kept their love a secret from the bride’s parents, who did not want their daughter to marry outside their Knanayan faith.
