Trigger Warning sexual assault/rape:
As some of you may have heard, an unconscious woman was raped by Brock Allen Turner, in January of 2015 at Stanford University. He was found guilty of three counts of sexual assault, and would face a maximum of 14 years in prison (not enough.) On Thursday, he was sentenced to a mere six months in county jail because the judge said a longer sentence would have a "severe impact" on him. This is the closing paragraph of a letter that the victim (she has not released her name) read aloud to the court on Thursday, in which she describes being faced with questions such as the classic "what were you wearing?" and "how much were you drinking?". What she was wearing did not matter. What she had to drink did not matter. What matters is that the culture we have here in America today, asks a rape victim what they were wearing, as if that grants the rapist an excuse. What matters is that we have a judicial system that would rather protect a rapist because a long sentence would have a "severe impact" on him, than a 23 year old young woman who's entire life is now drastically altered and made horrible because of this event.
