Photo by @jorisvanalphen: "The pitchers of a splendid pitcher plant — a giant carnivorous plant — growing on Mount Kinabalu on Borneo.
It grows only on a handful of high mountain ridges where the conditions are just right. These are places where hot, moist air rising from the lowlands meets cold air from above, creating an everlasting veil of mist. Frequent heavy rains wash away nutrients that collect on the ridge. Most plants would struggle here, but tropical pitcher plants thrive because they can get nutrients from other sources. Many species trap insects, others trap leaf litter, and some giants attract rodents with a promise of sugar. They don't try to eat the rodents, though — what they are really after is the nutritious poo the rodents drop while they go about their business.
These are the kinds of species that are suffering most from climate change — rare and incredibly specialized, they can't keep up when conditions change. The El Niño event of 1997-98 came close to wiping out the populations of this and other pitcher plants." #plants #pitcherplants #amazing #conservation
