In Brazil, traveling to school can mean risking your life. For the fourth episode of Get Schooled, The Girl Project sent filmmaker Alexandra Roxo to a crime-ridden area of Brazil to meet Karine, a brave 15-year-old who refuses to stay home, despite the danger. She’s supported by Girl Project partner Plan International.

“It’s really important to see the lives of these girls so that we have perspective on our own lives. I think it’s beautiful to be reminded how hard young women around the world are working in their communities and how much they’re striving to be the best versions of themselves,” Alexandra says. “I think that we as women living in the United States with a certain amount of privilege, we have a duty to be curious about other women’s stories around the world. And it’s our duty to facilitate telling them.”
