"A table for one please." He was kind. He was friendly. And he was open to a conversation with anyone who would/could stop by and chat. As I walked from table to table, greeting customers, thanking them for coming, asking how their pizza was... telling them to be sure to save room for the chocolate chip cookie pizza, I stopped and said hello. He seemed lonely. Kinda needy. And gentle. He asked me if I liked poems. (If he was younger I would have thought "great pick up line buddy.") I said I did. And with that he took out a wad of folded old/yellowed, papers from his pocket and asked, with sad questioning eyes, if he could read me a couple. (((TENDER!))) I sat down at his table and he began to tell me his story... "I'm a poet. I've written over 2,400 poems. I have five books published. My wife died." He had tears in his eyes as he spoke. I had tears in my eyes as he read.... about love, and life and laughing.. and a woman in a red dress who loves to dance all night long. I leaned in. I love to do all those things. Especially the red dress part. ???? This man was a lover. And expressed his love on paper. Through poems. To anyone who would listen. In this moment, while eating pizza, it was so obvious that he longed to be seen. To be heard.... To be loved. To be known. Who once upon a time had been known! A man who was clearly gifted in conveying the depth and beauty of his heart and soul through the written word. I will never forget our encounter Yes, several hearts were spread to him. He promised to pass them on. "I'm going to keep one in my breast pocket, close to my heart, every day, the rest of my life". A child spilled his drink on the floor at the table next to us. I got up to help with the commotion. When I returned to our conversation, he was gone. Thank you for the beautiful moment Mr. _______.
