In North Wilkesboro, North Carolina, a bare-bones e-cigarette shop serves as a modest oasis, a place to catch a mild nicotine buzz and let a world of worry float away on banks of big, cloying, candy-flavored clouds. This faltering Appalachian town is the largest in Wilkes County, which has watched its factory jobs wither and its homegrown business, @loweshomeimprovement, relocate. The worries that locals — overwhelmingly white, mostly working class and ranging from their 20s to middle age —bring through the doors of @taperingvapor are common. They fear that an honest, 40-hour working-class job can no longer pay the bills. They fear a fraying social fabric.
