Our extraordinary friend @noellacoursaris of @malaikadrc is in the latest issue of @thevioletbook as part of a regular series of photographs based on an idea I had of women redefining themselves outside of traditional roles. I wanted to use a few of the aesthetic traits Cecil Beaton, Snowden and Avedon used so beautifully in their classic photographs of debutantes, but where the subjects were not limited into displaying their beauty simply to garner a husband in a coming out ball. These women have purpose, they are not defined by their relationship to men, but by their own agency.
