Obscured by heat haze and ash, Richie Sinkovitz scaled a ridge along the American side of the Rio Grande to monitor a controlled burn happening below him. Richie, a burn boss trainee with the @nationalparkservice, is just one member of a Mexican and American crew working meticulously to kill giant cane, a tall bamboo-style invasive grass that grows in dense patches and restricts the flow of the Rio Grande. Their work, essentially weeding part of the border, required teamwork between the U.S. and Mexico, a bilingual crew and a total of nearly $500,000. To capture the photos we shared this #nytweekender, @tamirhasacellphone spent 3 days with the crew in @bigbendnps along the #RioGrande.
