Sheltering a 5 day #katabatic storm in #antarctica gives you a lot of time to work on your #chess strategy, it's also a good way to try and forget about the -40 degree conditions and 100mph winds outside. In these types of situations it's always key to have good company, @freddiewilkinson and I played countless games in his little shelter telling stories and laughing it up. Day 3 the winds got so bad that I was woken up to the sound of a muffled yell for "help!" over the howling winds. I scrambled out of my tent to see @mikelibecki exiting his tent and running over to Freddie's crumbled tent, with Freddie writhing inside. A rouge gust of wind had hit the tent so hard that it actually picked it up, with Freddie inside, and tossed it over a 3 foot high perimeter wind-wall, ripping out numerous guy-lines in the process. It was no joke. Freddie was slightly worse for wear but took it in stride, it was the second tent he had lost during the 53 day expedition. We helped him gather up his gear in the mach-ing winds and move it to @Cory Richards tent nearby.
