Throwback to my senior volleyball season at Dos Pueblos High School. There are 3 reasons why I love this photo: 1. I'm dropping it low for reception. I was a middle blocker in high school, but I played all the way around (shoutout to my coach Dwayne Hauschild). So I got to pass, play defense, and hit from the back row, in addition to all my middle blocker duties at the net. I loved it, and totally rocked it. To this day, I try to convince my coaches to let me do the same thing. I just have this burning desire to do it all, and a particular love for defense. In college, especially, I wouldn't shut up about it. Just ask John Dunning... I doubt I will ever get the opportunity again at the professional level, but that is a big reason why I love beach volleyball and plan on pursuing it after I am done with my indoor career. Then I can do it all! 2. My twin sister is playing next to me. We played together on almost every single sports team as we grew up. We are both extremely competitive, and those of you who have siblings (or even better, a twin) know that the rivalry between you is a double edged sword. So many 1 on 1 basketball games or friendly pepper sessions ended in petty arguments, but we also pushed each other to get better every day. And we truly just wanted to see each other succeed. She was my number one competitor, but also my number one supporter. I wouldn't be nearly as successful as I am today if I hadn't had Sam by my side. 3. The gym is PACKED. The support we got from the SB/Goleta community our senior year was incredible. We had a very talented team with 6 studly seniors, put on quite a show when we played, and had a blast, so the crowds loved it. People started to flock to our tiny high school gym - parents and families, sports enthusiasts, our high school peers painted up & bearing giant signs... Soon we were playing with the bleachers overflowing in a sea of blue and gold, and the cheering was so loud, you could hardly hear your own voice. It was electric. And it remains one of the most alive and thrilling environments I've ever played in. PS - We finished the season as CIF champions. #gochargers
