I was first introduced to Illinois Jacquet on the S.S. Norway Jazz Cruise. Hank O’Neal was the music producer for the ship and graciously allowed me to photograph the musicians. The musicians quickly trusted me because I was also a saxophonist who knew a lot about jazz. I could play, but not to their caliber. After cruising with the musician on the S.S. Norway I later followed up with Illinois to create Texas Tenor: The Illinois Jacquet Story. This photo was taken in a small town outside of Paris where Illinois was performing and while filming for the movie, 1990.
