I have to thank @lavernecox for recommending this book by Bell Hooks. It's a truly brilliant account of how patriarchal culture negatively effects both men and women.
As a society, we are continually taught from a young age that a man's role is to be dominant and powerful, placing this high above his need to be loving, compassionate, and connected. Our society fosters an obsession with the former, preventing so many men from truly knowing how to love themselves and others. As men, we are often taught that we are worthless if we are not constantly winning, whether it's making more money, achieving more success, or pursuing sex.
There is a better way that leads us to greater fulfillment rather than the temporary satiation of our need to be money-printing-fuck-machines. This upbringing that teaches us dominance as the primary motivating force for life not only risks our own chances of happiness, but leaves our partners and families consistently needing more. Check it before you wreck it (your life). Just kidding about that last part. But not really. You should read it.
