Rose Hartman broke ground as one of the first female photographers on the New York party circuit, and now she's the subject of a new documentary, The Incomparable Rose Hartman. We caught up with the Studio 54 staple before her film's #SXSW debut to get the real story behind some of her most iconic images. First up: Bianca Jagger's 1977 birthday bash. ___ "I was a fanatical dancer. I would go to Studio 54 not only to take photos, I would dance. I had this particular partner and we’d be having a wonderful time until I saw Calvin Klein, or Jerry Hall, or Andy Warhol. Then I’d grab my camera—I kept it hidden in the speakers, which were very, very huge. Other photographers never did that. They stood there waiting and watching, but that was not my particular style. I wanted to disarm. That night, there was a blond Lady Godiva figure. I don’t know her name. She rode in on that white horse, and I’m suspecting that she was a wonderful horsewoman. She looked nude, but she wasn’t. She had long, golden hair and she was wearing a body stocking. She got off the horse and Bianca got on for a minute. Bianca is from Nicaragua, and I’m sure she rode horses in the past. I just stood there amazed. The New York Times said it was the party of the decade. Bianca was absolutely gorgeous, and she would dance wildly—wildly!—wearing, usually, a Halston dress. To give you the back story, there was a very small inner sanctum. That would be Halston, and Bianca, and Diane von Furstenberg with Barry Diller. They would be there together. One could enter Studio 54, but you could not go behind the curtain. There was a huge, heavy curtain that separated the club in two. The back was filled with the jet set, and they’d be drinking champagne. And then at about 10:30 or 11 they’d raise the curtain, and everyone who bought tickets could attend. So once you were inside you could be dancing next to Bianca. She would often dance with this very handsome, very tall, black model called Sterling St. Jacques. She was just spectacular" - Rose Hartman
