Perhaps in part because they were a team of two, Peter Fischli and David Weiss challenged the idea of dualism, a cornerstone of Western thought. In one way or another, everything the artists produced playfully unravels what they understood to be “popular opposites”—labor versus leisure, fiction versus reality, kitsch versus beauty, and the banal versus the sublime, among others. The artists created a group of sculptures that illustrate and ultimately question these conventional pairs of contrasting ideas. "High and Low" features two little dogs, one standing on its hind legs, the other on all fours. Such juxtaposition wittily undermines the false dichotomies that #FischliWeiss identified as central to popular philosophy, asking viewers to rethink their most basic assumptions about everyday life.
