Body modification is a global phenomenon that is as old as we are. It's manifestations are numerous and commonly include piercing, tattooing, branding, circumcision, and scarring, among many others. The catalysts for modifications are nearly as numerous as the practices themselves and range from cultural to religious to psychological. The acceptance and/or rejection of the type of alteration is almost entirely dependent on the societal/social context of the observer. While one type is often readily accepted in one culture (think ear piercing and circumcision) others are rejected and judged (eyeball tattooing) while still others are celebrated as the beautiful and exotic 'other' (lip plugs of the Mursi). Another note on this image is that the lighting is almost entirely inspired by @marcogrob , one of my good friends and mentors. I posted another image on @ナショナルジオグラフィック of the same hand...which I have to point out is a very similar frame to one of Marco's from his 'Industrious' series. I think we need to voice and acknowledge those who inspire us and shape the way we move through the creative process. Many of my images are built on images that I like from other photographers. It would be a lie to say they are entirely mine. So here is to @marcogrob and the countless other people who have inspired me and brought me here. Also, big thanks to to @amnda_alxndria for being bold and stepping in front of the lens.
