Thinking about my friend @sharmeenobaid #sharmeenobaidchinoy and her 2016 Oscar nominated documentary 'Girl in the River'. A devastating account of the near murder of a young woman, by her father and Uncle - in the name of 'honour'. The girl married the man she loved without their permission. The Prime Minister of Pakistan (seated here with Sharmeen) publicly announced that he would outlaw Honour Killings if her film wins the Academy Award. Sick pressure if there ever was. The film deserves every prize for standing strong in its fight for women, and by extension humanity. Sharmeen is our heroine. She lights the darkest journey through oppression, and towards the nourishing light of liberation X Thandie
