Scroll through @maisiecousins Instagram feed and it’s almost impossible not to be overwhelmed by color. Her photography is saturated with vibrant hues, often bright, floral pinks and purples — so it may surprise you to learn that the 23-year-old London native actually doesn’t wear that much pink. Maisie, who describes herself and her work as “sensitive, fast, and messy” originally became interested in photography as a teenager blogging. These days though, she’s trying to turn to the original source more than the internet for inspiration. “I try to read and look at books more than images online,” she says. “I think firsthand inspiration is really important.” The growth of women in photography is also important to Maisie, who cites her favorite photographer Claude Cahun as one of her biggest inspirations and Bettina Rheims as the one person in the world she’d choose to take her portrait. And as for the #GirlGaze? “It’s great that so many females have picked up a camera in recent years, it’s turning the cliche of photography being ‘masculine’ on its head,” Maisie says. While she’s already had her videos shown in the Tate museum, her aspirations don’t end there. “I am desperate to get a book made!” she tells us. And based on the incredible success she’s had at such a young age, we’re pretty sure we’ll be placing our preorders super soon. —Words by @hannamariehoward This Instagram story is a part of The @GirlGazeProject, celebrating the next generation of female photographers.
