Dawoud Bey's "Wallace Simmons and Eric Allums" (2012) entered the Guggenheim's collection last year. Bey’s powerful photography addresses issues of identity and representation, and social relationships, grounding larger cultural issues through portraits of individuals. The "Birmingham Project"—Bey’s latest body of work—responds to the 1963 bombing of the 16th Street Baptist Church in Birmingham, Alabama. At right, Allums represents the age of one of the six young victims; at left, Simmons stands in for the age that victim would have been in 2012. A powerful evocation of the recent and ongoing struggle for Civil Rights. We will be showcasing works by African-American artists in the Guggenheim collection throughout #BlackHistoryMonth.
