The Bamiyan valley in Afghanistan's central highlands, is known as the site of the once celebrated Bamiyan Buddhas destroyed by the Taliban in in 2001. This rich and fertile land is home to farmers who work the irrigated fields that criss-cross the basin floor and provide a plentiful supply of potatoes, wheat and barley. From as early as the first century, roads like this formed an important part of the ancient Silk Route. The differing cultural and religious traditions brought by the traders can be seen in the remnants of temples,
monasteries and religious art still found across the region.
