Pelen Hussein, 20, was one of the lucky ones. On Feb. 8, 2016, as the Syrian refugee attempted to make the crossing between Turkey and Greece, his boat capsized. At least 27 people drowned in the incident, the latest migrant maritime tragedy this year. The Turkish Coast Guard rescued Hussein as he stood atop the nearly sunken boat in the Aegean Sea.
