I had a discussion with a friend last night about whether or not people don't eat healthy based on the idea that it's more expensive. Regardless of when, but you always pay. Either now with good food that will give you strength and energy or with medical bills later . Either way, you pay. Here's a small portion of my brother in- laws story, that proves the idea that you can eat healthy for less, and transform your life. Here's what he said ... Eating healthy isn't a 'diet' or simply just 'eating', it's a complete lifestyle change. When I talk to people about my transformation in health I tell them I changed my 'lifestyle' habits, mental & physical. It isn't easy and it takes time, but results are real. First, starts with the mind. I was so ill I had to do something. I was diagnosed with Ulcerative Colitis. Doctors told me there was no cure to uclerative colitis and I'd be taking medications the rest of my life. They also said food had nothing to do with it. I said BS! How could food NOT affect my gut? I made up my mind I would do whatever it took to get healthy again. That meant reading, learning, connecting with people, consulting with physicians, etc. Once I found what I believed to be a sensible way to manage the disease I was fanatical and changed my habits. I monitored everything I ate closely and that comes to step 2, meal planning. Next, Eating healthy isn't more expensive! We average about $1200/month on groceries between eight people. We rarely eat out (less than $200/month dining out). That comes to about $5 per person per day. Only about $1 more than what people on food stamps get. I point that out simply to share that we eat healthy, whole foods on that budget. It's not easy, it takes planning, budgeting and work, but it can be done. It's how I show the whole 'eating healthy is too expensive' phrase is a myth. It's not too expensive, it's just more work.
