Cases of microcephaly, which has been linked to the Zika virus outbreak, are skyrocketing in Brazil, topping 4,000 and triggering travel alerts. On Feb. 1, the World Health Organization declared a public health emergency in response to the virus. In this photograph, Juliana Diniz da Slva, 22, holds her three-month-old son Pedro Henrique da Silva in her house in Nova Descoberta, a favela in the outskirts of Recife, Brazil. When she was seven months pregnant the doctors discovered that the baby had microcephaly, a rare birth defect causing an unusually small head and incomplete brain development.
