Xwinda, 17, is a soldier in training with the People’s Protection Units in Rojava, a sliver of land in Northern Syria. Along with the Female Project Units, or Y.P.J., the People's Protection Units have become key American allies in the region, where women have been championed as leaders and male soldiers are encouraged to “think like a woman.” In this week’s cover story, Wes Enzinna traveled to Rojava to find out whether it’s truly the utopia it claims to be.
