#OnThisDay in 2007 José Carlos Bauer passed away aged 81. One of the finest Brazilian midfielders of his generation, he played for São Paulo and Botafogo, winning six state championships. Bauer played a total of 29 matches for the Brazil national team, winning the Copa América in 1949 and participating at two FIFA World Cup finals, in 1950 and 1954. After retiring, he worked as a coach in Brazil, Colombia and Mexico.
