OUR STORY SO FAR: Last Jan, Tyler and Pudding (both rescues) were our only cats. Rochelle and Loki, who were born and raised in a tiny balcony, came along 2 weeks later because 2 adopters had fallen through and they were getting too big to be cooped up in a small space. Another 2 weeks later, on Valentine's Day, William's previous owners were going to dump him on the streets for "spoiling the furniture". In Aug, my cousin tells me that a bunch of cats are about to go through a "sterilization exercise" at the shipyard where he works. We take 3 kittens in, dirty, flea-ridden and sick and did everything we could for them. One didn't make it and the other two, Uno-James and Hermès, are thriving today. Kal came to me with 2 leg fractures and a diaphragmatic hernia. The easiest way out would have been to put him down like it had been suggested to me. But a leap of faith, 1 surgery and lots of TLC later, he's now healthy and happy. Daisy had been confined to a room because her previous owner's 2 cats had been bullying her and today she's on my bed next to me, bossing the others around and commandeering the playroom whenever she feels like it. At every step of the way, we heard it all: "give them away", "can you afford it?" or how crazy/irresponsible/stupid it was to give each of these cats a home at the cost of vacations, expensive meals, new clothes etc. And now, taking in FIV+ Zoey - same thing. It would be easier to just give her to someone else who says today that they would care for her whatever the cost; just pass her on so my other cats would not be at risk... Well, EVERYTHING IS A RISK. Who knows what tomorrow will bring? It's probably something I will be unprepared for but it doesn't mean I shouldn't at least try. I know there are some who disagree, who think I'm making bad decisions and it would be "better" to have less cats than more... That's fine. Please remember, if I had taken that advice, half of these faces that you see above, that you know and love might not be here today - so I hope you understand if I won't apologize for my choices.
