What does a parrot know about PTSD? Tango, the green-wing macaw pictured here, lives alongside other abandoned — and deeply traumatized — former pets at Serenity Park, a #parrot sanctuary in West Los Angeles. Abandoned pet parrots are twice-traumatized beings: denied first their natural will to flock and then the company of the humans who owned them. But as part of a work-therapy program at Serenity Park, which was founded by a psychologist, damaged birds are bonding with traumatized veterans. As the 2 outcasts of human aggression help each other to find their way again, they could reveal surprising insights into animal intelligence. @jackdavisonphoto photographed Tango and other parrots at Serenity Park for @nytmag.
