I remember a mom saying to me, "If we do mothering well, we work ourselves out of a job." I am terrified of facing an empty nest, and toy with the idea of what it would take to psychologically damage them enough so they never leave! My sisters have described the experience of when their children leave for college as heartbreak, but the boyfriend-just-dumped-my-ass kind of heartbreak. It's hardcore and I am not looking forward to it.
The other night at dinner I playfully said, "Hey, when you guys go to college, your dad and I will get an apartment nearby! Won't that be fun?" (See, I am a little sick about this whole issue) and my 13-year-old paused and then said, "Mom, college is a time to be AWAY from your parents, you can't come with me." So... I guess I have worked myself out of a job. Shit! (via @whattheflicka)
