The library is also home to rare historic manuscripts, books and archives dating back to the 12th century. The Duchess is shown one of the rarest items from the university's special collection, the Aberdeen Bestiary, an exquisite illuminated manuscript which was once owned by The Royal Collection. This manuscript describes a medieval understanding of the natural world including birds and beasts, mythical and true, and is a celebration of the extraordinary artistry and craftsmanship of the age.
