Martin Luther King Jr. provided the world an unprecedented message of peace, tolerance, and acceptance. King combated the immoral and unjust confines against millions of Americans' inalienable rights to life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness. Skateboarding has never been about race or judging people based on their class or gender. Skateboarders operate outside the complacency of a society attempting to box us in, telling us how to think and how to interact with our environment. In an industry like skateboarding, there may always be certain factions pinned against each other, but we ultimately show love and support for each other because of our shared passion. MLK taught us: "The ultimate measure of a man is not where he stands in moments of comfort and convenience, but where he stands at times of challenge and controversy." On the surface, skating may be a measurement of physical challenges, but how we treat each other and our fellow human beings can also be full of controversy. When you go out and skate today or this weekend, shake hands with every skater you can—because at some point in history you may not have been able to. Thank you, Martin Luther King Jr., from The Berrics and skateboarders everywhere.
